Google Play Billing Library 7 Deprecation
You had two years
August 31, 2026. That’s the date your app stops working if you’re still on Billing Library 7. November 1 if you beg for an extension. Billing Library 7 shipped in May 2023, that’s three years ago. If you’re still on it, you’ve had a better run than most marriages.
What happens if you don’t migrate?
If you publish a new app after that date with Billing Library 7, it will be rejected. If you update an existing app after that date with Billing Library 7, it will be rejected. If you reject the premise, you will be rejected. To be fair, the Play Console has been showing a yellow warning banner for months.
The fix
Open build.gradle. Find com.android.billingclient:billing:7.x.x. Change 7 to 9. Follow the migration guide for the API changes. Test it. Ship it.
That’s it. That’s the migration. It’s not a rewrite. It’s not a platform change. It’s a version number and a handful of code changes.
Why 9 instead of 8?
Because if you’re going to migrate anyway, don’t migrate to the version that’s next on the chopping block. Billing Library 8 already has an expiration date. So save yourself the work 12 months from now, and go straight to 9.
The extension
Google is offering an extension to November 1, 2026. You can request it, but you shouldn’t need it. Having read this post you’ve already done half the work, so you may as well finish it. Instead of forgetting everything and having to look it all up again in late november.
